In my previous post, I introduced how to use city buses in Korea. This time, I'll explain how to use intercity buses, which are essential for traveling between cities!
Korea has a well-developed public transportation system, and intercity buses allow you to travel conveniently not only to major cities like Seoul, Busan, and Daejeon but also to smaller towns. Unlike city buses, intercity buses are faster, and unlike express buses, they make multiple stops along the way, allowing passengers to get on and off at different locations.
What Are Intercity Buses?
Intercity buses operate between cities or between a city and a smaller town.
Some routes use highways for faster travel, but they typically stop at multiple stations along the way.
Since intercity buses make several stops, you need to press the stop button in advance to signal the driver when you want to get off.
How to Use an Intercity Bus
1. Find a Terminal
Intercity buses depart from intercity bus terminals. Each city has at least one terminal, and large cities
may have multiple terminals.
2. Buying a Ticket
Ticket purchase methods: At the terminal: Purchase at a ticket counter or use a self-service kiosk.
Online reservation: Bustago (www.bustago.or.kr)
Mobile app reservation: TmoneyGO (티머니GO) – Available nationwide / Regional apps may also be
available (e.g., Gyeonggi Bus, Jeolla Bus, etc.)
Some routes require pre-booking, while others allow boarding at intermediate stops using a transportation card (e.g., T-money).
3. Boarding and Getting Off
- Arrive at least 10 minutes before departure and check your boarding gate.
- Show your mobile or paper ticket to the driver.
- Sit in your assigned seat and wait for departure.
- For routes with multiple stops, check your destination in advance and press the stop button
before arriving to alert the driver.
Useful Tips
- Luggage storage: Small bags can be placed on your seat, but larger luggage should be stored in
the compartment under the bus.
- Rest stops: Long-distance buses may stop at rest areas for short breaks.
- Payment methods:
For pre-booked routes: Payment by cash or card is required.
For boarding at intermediate stops: Some routes allow transportation card (T-money, etc.)
payments.
Now that you know how to use intercity buses, your travels in Korea will be much smoother!
In the next post, I will cover express buses. Stay tuned!
